Future Prospects

PROMACNUTS plans to construct a processing plant to add value to nuts from his farm and from farmers by producing final products for domestic and export market. This will not only create more jobs, but will also contribute to efforts to expand Rwanda’s exports and to narrow the national trade deficit.

Proposed Solutions

• To look for the skilled personnel in the macadamia industry
• The Government should think how to raise subsidies (Smart Nkunganire System) to enhance capacity for farmers to access to the macadamia grafted seedlings  
• To keep on sensitizing the rural communities to avoid to robbery of seedlings

Project Sustainability

• To enhance sensitization of the community members as a strategic way for rising their awareness and increase their ownership and contribution on macadamia tree
• Monitoring, maintenance  and follow up of trees planted 
• Strong collaboration with local leaders
• Tree nursery bed managers were trained for tree nursery maintenance and grafting in order to raise their knowledge for preparing seedlings properly.
• Free technical assistance to farmers how to plant and maintain trees.

Challenges

• Poor germination rate of macadamia and the failure of germinated seedlings of Macadamia. Very few seeds of Macadamia were germinated but also immediately failing after putting them in plastic bags.
• Stealing of grafted seedlings: The grafted macadamia seedlings were stolen and planted without recordings
• Macadamia Grafting Success Rate which is low (40%)
• The farmers don’t have purchase power to buy macadamia grafted seedlings
